For the first time since my forties, I sleep through the night. I do it on a bed sheet with a cable coming out of the corner, and I have stopped being embarrassed about that.

She said it the way you say something you know sounds mad. I said no, and then I said several other things. She told me she had been sleeping on one since Easter and that her husband had ordered a second.

My sister is a retired bookkeeper. She does not buy things on a whim. So I looked, and the first thing I noticed was the cable.

What it actually is

The practical bits

It goes on like any fitted sheet. Deep corners, elastic all round, and it sits on top of your mattress protector. You sleep on it directly, so your legs or arms touch the fabric, and you wear whatever you normally wear.

It washes at 40 degrees. Unclip the cable, wash it with your other whites, no fabric softener. Mine has been through the machine eleven times and still looks new.

The cable is 5.5 metres. Ours reaches the socket on the far wall with room to spare. It is thin and white and disappears behind the headboard.

Wash day. It dries like any cotton sheet and the silver thread does not mind the wind.

What I compared it with
